On the Other Side of Town

In the old days, the limestone roundhouse and Chicago & Alton Shops were located on the west side of town where the skies were always filled with smoke, where noise was always at the highest decibel and where the kids gathered to take in the excitement of the steam locomotives and the new diesels.

Today, unfortunately, only one limestone building stands in memory of the C & A Shops.  Though many of the tracks are still in place,  the west side is now modernized, having escaped the ‘low rent’ tag, of old.

Thanks for dropping by; it’s always fun to see you.

On the Other Side of town

On the other side of town ‘neath a smoke-filled sky,
over where the rent runs low,
lads always watched on bridges, high
on the other side of town ‘neath a smoke-filled sky.
They counted locomotives and watched diesels cry
waiting for the train yard whistles, blow
on the other side of town ‘neath a smoke-filled sky,
over where the rent runs low.

Through the Windows of an Amtrak train

While waiting for the California Zephyr out on the platform recently, I thought back at some of the trips taken previously over the same stretch of track and wondered why I never get tired of the trip.  In fact, I always get excited anticipating the moment.  The truth must be that we never get tired or bored with the things we truly love………no matter what that might encompass.  That doesn’t mean, I don’t think, that because we are bored with something,  that we don’t love it.  I hope not.

But anyway, I also wrote this quick little triolet.  Hope your travels are happy ones.

Through the Windows of an Amtrak Train

Through the windows of an Amtrak train
you can see America come alive.
You might see a snowstorm, tornado or just rain
through the windows of an Amtrak train.
Going through towns, over rivers, you might see a plane –
for sure, a Wal-Mart and MacDonald’s when you arrive.
Through the windows of an Amtrak train
you can see America come alive.
