Nature Unstable

Nature Unstable

The clouds above foment and churn
forecasting trouble soon.
The birds are quickly to discern,
their lives are not immune
to Mother Nature when she’s mad
and makes her presence known,
when every living thing that has
a heart…. feels all alone.

The lightning strikes; the thunder booms;
moments stand unstable.
Seconds pass as each assumes
life will soon be able
to return to how it use to be
when all was calm and good
before Mother Nature showed her might
and we watched and understood.

Today the light will come to me
and shine along the path
that I must take so I can be
safe among the wrath
that festers everywhere I look
in places here and far
and demands that I look over you
no matter where you are.

Fairy Fall

Feeling whimsical today….

Fairy Fall

She stood behind the leaf on the branch above the knot
on the tree trunk, near the river where he fished and where he got
bitten by the dog that had come from down the road
from the farm that raised the chickens, he had learned of when it snowed
last winter….a month before the thaw.

She watched him as he cleaned his hand and bandaged it up tight
in shadows through the morning mist in the coolness of the light.
that slithered down between the trees and fell upon the ground
and splashed along the water’s edge, hitting all it found
as she watched him pause at what he saw.

She was sure he didn’t see her but his gaze was firm….her way
and she peeked beneath the moistened leaf and gasped at the spray
that drenched her hair down to her toes and made her wings to stick
and she lost her balance and hit the ground…. with a spark and light and click
so loud that she was sure….that he knew.

She moved with caution ‘round the tree as he started to walk her way
and the birds all started whistling loud and the fish began to play
and caught his attention and he froze in time, then turned and went on back
and got his pole that was lying there…. against the sleeping bag and black
dog that now seemed harmlessly…..’blue.’

A fairy has to watch her ways, yet learn of all she can
but safety is the fairy thing; that is the fairy plan.
And knowing she was lucky; she watches from afar
as he pats the dog with his bandaged hand and chews on his cigar
and casts his pole across the blaze of morn’.

‘Character’ Set

I marvel at how something, seemingly, insignificant can, when scrutinized, become ‘visible’ and realized as a necessary part of an equation…in this instance, an ordinary scene outside in the yard.

The repeated scene unknowingly always had a certain set of props, which at first, weren’t realized.

‘Character’ Set

When I sit down to write, whether morning or night,
there are birds there to sing me a song.
The dog’s at my feet; the cat’s found her seat
and together we seem to belong
to the moment we’re in, with a feeling of kin,
as we look towards each other… now and then……
before the birds fly away, the dog goes astray
and the cat goes a-chasing….again.

It’s a comfort we know, we understand it…. and so
being close ‘round each other’s, okay.
Thus you might see the cat, by the dog, laying flat
‘neath the fountain where the birds splash away.
That’s how it goes; what’ll happen, who knows
it’s a mystery that I always get,
whenever I write, whether morning or night,
outside with this ‘character’ set.

New Hawk

Hope you all have a safe, happy weekend.  Today I present my latest original hawk….his name is ‘Coor.’

(gargano's original Prairie Hawk)

This hawk is 17″ long with a wingspan of 35″ made from 83 aluminum cans.  I’m not a big beer drinker but I have a great source for obtaining all kinds of cans…beer and soda varieties.  Cute isn’t he?   haha

God, Keep Us Always

This is actually a song I wrote for my first daughter, Amy’s, wedding.

Our second daughter, Betsy  – who is a lovely singer having sung plays in Chicago for a couple of years, up in Montana and in Denver  –  was originally going to sing it,

but…. she came down with a very sore throat and that left Dad – me –  to sing it at the wedding…

..double-duty for me…..walking Amy down the aisle ….after singing her wedding song……she probably thought she was going to be the more nervous that day.  haha.

GOD, Keep Us Always

GOD
we pray that your love keeps us always,
always and blessed by your love.
GOD
we pray that your love keeps us always,
with blessings each day from above.

When roads become rocky and life seems to stir.
When visions are fuzzy and life’s all a blur.
We pray your love keeps us and guides us along
with beautiful flowers and birds in sweet song.

GOD
we pray that your love keeps us always,
always and blessed by your love.
GOD
we pray that your love keeps us always,
with blessings each day from above.

When dreams turn to wishes and heartaches do burn.
When roads become narrow, don’t know where to turn.
We pray your love keeps us and guides us along
With beautiful flowers and birds in sweet song.

GOD
we pray that your love keeps us always,
always and blessed by your love.
GOD
we pray that your love keeps us always,
always…..in love.

‘O. Henry, The Crow”

Another, nonsensical, fun poem that I wrote when I was a young man and here’s a little story behind it.

Working at an A & P market, a co-worker of mine was studying taxidermy and wanted to know if I wanted a stuffed animal.  I thought he was talking about a tiger or something (yeah right)…anyway, I said ‘sure.’  I was living at home, of course, and didn’t think anymore about it.  But a week later, Johnathan brings me in this huge crow sitting on a log.  This bird had been eating for a while, which is probably why he got caught.

Well, I took him home and it scared mom to death but she let me keep him.  Johnathan had done a superb job with him and for reasons I do not know or can’t remember, I named him…O. Henry.  Years later, I had him sitting on a high cabinet next to a window, and when mom was visiting, she moved that curtain and it hit O.Henry and he came down on her and AGAIN…scared her to death.

A few more tumbles, over the years, did him in, but he remains a good memory.  Here is ‘O. Henry’

“O. Henry, The Crow”

O. Henry, O. Henry, O. Henry’s my crow.
Sittin’ there thinking, what does he know?
O. Henry just sits there each day of the week,
sittin’ there thinking unable to speak.

O. Henry, O. Henry speak up my boy.
Give me thy troubles, tell me thy joys.
O. Henry, O. Henry remember the days,
you used to fly the hours away.

Through summer all faded, and when fall has been sewn,
sitting there thinking, he’ll be all alone.
His mind must be roamin’, his thoughts must be high
remembering the good days, up in the sky.

Winter has come now; O. Henry must sleep.
Spring will be coming to gather her reap.
His majesty O. Henry, O. Henry the crow
Sitting there thinking……… but nobody knows.

Spring Is Late

Ever so often, it seems like the days of winter lag longer into the new year.  This ‘lag’ becomes foremost in many a person’s mind, impatient for their dreams of the new summer.

Spring Is Late

Though spring is late in coming by
birds still sing their summer song.
And tree to tree they playfully fly,
though spring is late in coming by.
To Nature’s rhythm, squirrels scamper and cry;
gathering twigs they carry along.
Though spring is late in coming by
birds still sing their summer song.
